My orchestra (Community Women’s Orchestra) performed last night with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus at Davies Symphony Hall. I was a great concert and especially poignant with the California Supreme Court’s announcement yesterday that same-sex marriages are constitutional. Additionally, there were several new pieces on the program that had never been performed before and were written especially for the choir.
Performing with the chorus is always a ton of fun because they (and their audience) are so enthusiastic. Before joining the CWO I had never really performed with a chorus outside of a few small pieces. They are a very talented group with historic significance. Earlier this year when I performed in the U.S.S. Metaphor we only had about a third of the chorus with us, for this concert we had the full 300 men, that’s a lot of sound.
Playing in Davies Symphony Hall (where the SF symphony plays) was awesome! I’ve never played someplace so big or fancy before. Backstage is cool, there are dressing rooms, intercoms for calling performers to the stage, and video monitors to watch the stage. The venue seats 2,741 people, by far the biggest place I’ve ever played at. Although it wasn’t near full, there were probably over 1,000 people there, the biggest crowd I’ve ever played for.
