Tonight was a volunteering night at Project Open Hand. Helped chop up pounds upon pounds of onions and cooked chicken.
Project Open Hand is a non-profit that provides meals to homebound people living with serious illnesses (mainly HIV/AIDS) and seniors in the San Francisco Area. I volunteer there every few weeks. I got involved with the organization through Hands On Bay Area. HOBA is a well-organized database full of all sorts of volunteering opportunities throughout the Bay Area that you can sort by date, type of cause, or location.
I found HOBA after I first moved to California (July 2007). I wasn’t working, knew no one in the area, and as a consequence, was bored out of my mind. I decided that volunteering would be a good solution. I had plenty of free time and figured it was a good way to meet new people. Since then I’ve done many different projects though HOBA but Project Open Hand has been one of my favorites.
