Ferry Building Farmers Market

Ferry Building ClocktowerGriffin and I rode our bikes to the farmers market at the Ferry Building this morning. It’s absolutely beautiful outside, sunny and warm. So warm that even the brisk breeze off the water felt good. However, since it was so nice out EVERYONE was out, the market and walkways were very crowded making it a little difficult to get around at times.

The farmers market at the Ferry Building happens every Tuesday (10am-2pm) and Saturday (8am-2pm). A few weeks back we tried to go but your’s truly read the website wrong and thought it was on SUNday instead of SATurday. Oops. Oh well, it was still a nice ride.

The market was much bigger than I thought it was going to be. All sorts of vendors from all over Northern California selling all sorts of produce and prepared foods (chutneys, hummuses, cheeses, etc.). A lot of it looked really good but it was SOOOOOO expensive. Most of it was more than twice as expensive as at the grocery store. I guess it just demonstrates economies of scale. We ended up leaving without getting anything, although some of the vendors selling lunch food looked really good, and I had my eyes on a bag of kettle corn. Maybe next time. Also, there was a knife sharpener, good to know as our knives will need sharpening at some point.

I love the ride along the water front to the market. The area along the water down near us (known as the Dogpatch) is an old industrial area that is just beginning to undergo a huge revival. There is tons of construction on new condos and lofts. It will be interesting to see the area morph. There are still old piers and shipyards to check out as you ride by. As you head north you ride pass (actually around) the Giant’s stadium. There is a nice big walk way and you can even see onto the field. There’s a game tonight so people were working on the grass and cleaning the stadium. North of the ballpark along the water is a wide walk way were lots of people bike, run, and walk. All sorts of families were out today.

The Ferry Building is a historic structure that was recently renovated to house a large number of very upscale shops and restaurants. They are ridiculously expensive and sell all sorts of obscure varieties of things you never knew you needed. There is a store that ONLY sells mushrooms, that’s it. You can by truffles for something like $25/oz. There’s also specialty cheese, bread, and chocolate shops as well as a cafe that only serves caviar. Some of the other restaurants and cafes look REALLY delicious but we’ve never ate there, usually I’m to appalled by the prices.

Crossing this one off the “San Francisco To-Do List!”
